Tissue Culture Bootcamp
Join us in MID-Michigan - April 25-27th for our upcoming session..
What's included:
18 hours of hands on lab experience
Media formulas and SOPs
Tissue Culture Starter Kit- (test tubes, media, PGRs)
Access to exclusive video content of entire course to rewatch later
Access to exclusive Discord Channels for GLTC graduate.
Learn tissue culture in an immersive environment in this hands on 3-day intensive training. This training is for aspiring plant biotechnologists, horticulturists, students furthering their education in plant science or biology, professionals in agriculture, biotechnology, or horticulture looking to enhance their skills, and anyone who wants to learn plant tissue culture techniques for practical applications.
Get hands-on learning experience with experts in plant tissue culture, as well as the opportunity to work in real time with a range of plant tissue specimens. Students are also encouraged to bring their own plant specimens if they have suitable material to use for micropropogration, meristem isolation or embryo rescue.
Learn both theoretical concepts and practical techniques used in advanced plant tissue culture while you network with other tissue culture enthusiasts. Leave with your genetics in tissue culture.

Learn the science of plant regeneration. Build your skill set in this intensive, hands-on workshop.

8:00 am- Breakfast & Orientation
In person students arrive and have a light breakfast, coffee or tea, and an orientation to the facility.
8:30 am- Digital Student Check-in
Digital students log on to verify connection and troubleshoot streaming issues.
9:00 am- Tissue Culture Theory Lecture
Introduction to tissue culture from square one. We will cover all the basics with a lecture and demonstrations. We will also discuss supplies, equipment , sourcing, formulas and a full spectrum of tissue culture topics. Questions encouraged. This morning session is designed to to bring everyone attending up to speed before we begin the the hands on portion.
12:00 pm- Lunch and Social Hour
Lunch is ready for in person students. Online students please rejoin livestream by 12:55pm, but you are welcome to stay on to chat and listen to the conversation.
1:00 pm- Introduction to Flow Hood Workflow
Hands on lab work begins. We will discuss flow hoods and how to practice a clean workflow, how to get comfortable working inside the hood, and other tips and tricks.
2:00 pm- Introduction to Making Media
We'll put our formulas to work and make all the types of media we will be using over the next couple of days- rooting media, shooting media, meristem media as well as embryo rescue media. We will discuss making your media and PGRs from scratch to using ready made option available on the market, tailoring your media to different plants and more.
3:00 pm -Sub-Culturing Explants & Finish Pouring Media.
Learn to identify the best material to use for your cultures. Explore the tools to use and how to handle micro sized pieces of plants efficiently with hands on practice. Once media has cooled, finish pouring test tubes and delis of media, capping it and labeing it for future use,

Time and place decided for group dinner (optional ) for in person students.
Saturday- April 26th 2025
8:00 am- Breakfast and Social Hour
In person students may arrive at 8:00 am for breakfast and coffee. Online students please check your connection by 8:50 to troubleshoot if needed.
9:00 am- Subculturing Practice
Continue hands on practice subculture plant material
10:00 am- Meristem media making
Begin the journey into meristem work by making the media the meristem will get placed into.
12:00 pm- Lunch and Social Hour
Lunch is ready for in person students. Online students please rejoin stream by 12:55
1:00 pm- Meristem Presentation & Demonstration
A brief discussion of meristem theory, examples across the plant kingdom, and then a demonstration of how to use a microscope to isolate a meristem. Discussion on equipment and how to set up your microscope, camera and screen will be covered as well as tips for learning to work with such tiny specimen while viewing everything on a screen.
2:00 pm- Meristem Isolation
Students will take turns working on the microscope and watching as we isolate meristem after meristem until everyone feels confident they can easily locate and isolate a meristem.
3:00 pm- Meristem Media Pouring & Begin Embryo Rescue Seed Soak
Once everyone is sick of trying to find meristems we will take a break and pour our meristem media we will be using. tomorrow. We will also begin soaking the seeds we will be using tomorrow for embryo rescue. Students are welcome to bring their own material to work with or use the materials we provide.
4:00 pm- Class Dismissed
Time and place decided for group dinner (optional ) for in person students.

9:00 am- Embryo Rescue Presentation
We will briefly discuss embryo rescue theory, techniques and technology. We will demonstrate how to successfully extract embryos and how to properly insert them into media to ensure desired results.
10: 00 am- Embryo Rescue Practice
Students will begin the hands on process of embryo rescue using the seeds we prepped yesterday. If students brought their own seeds to rescue, we will provide practice materials, and then when they are confident they can put their genetics into tissue culture to take home.
12:00 - Lunch & Social Hour
Lunch is ready for in person students. Online students please rejoin stream by 12:55

In person students will be encouraged to decide which areas they feel they want more practice in and we will work accordingly- often with one student working on the microscope, while another works in the flow hood, while another may be practicing subculturing plant material they brought to put into tissue culture. Online students will have the opportunity to to watch the streams of all the hands on work practices and are encouraged to ask any last questions they have in this time.
3:45- Conclusion
We will wrap up the weekend with some final thoughts, answer any last questions and . share resources for graduates of GLTC's TCBC. Graduates of the Tissue Culture Bootcamp recieve access to video content from the course as well as access to future digital modules as they are released. Participants are welcome to join GLTC's discord to share their results, ask questions and learn from others.
