Founder & Tissue Culture Specialist

With a background in chemistry and biochemistry and more than a decade of experience in molecular biology, Derek brings a scientific approach to the practical challenges of plant tissue culture. His experience spans more than 20 years of horticulture and includes hands-on experience with plant propagation, tissue culture, laboratory techniques, and commercial production.

Over the years, Derek has developed specialized expertise in plant tissue culture, including meristem culture, micropropagation, media development, genetic preservation, and the establishment and optimization of tissue-culture laboratories. His approach combines laboratory science with practical production experience—focusing not only on developing protocols that work in theory, but on creating reliable systems that can be implemented in a working laboratory.

Great Lakes Tissue Culture was founded to bring this combination of scientific knowledge and hands-on experience to growers, breeders, laboratories, and organizations looking to develop or improve their own tissue-culture capabilities.
